# How to Connect Odoo to Facebook Using a System User Token

## Why System User Token?

OAuth-based connections are tied to a Facebook user. When that user's session expires, their permissions change, or they leave the organization, the connection breaks.

A System User is a non-human account managed at the Meta Business level. Tokens generated for system users are long-lived (or non-expiring) and aren't tied to any individual's login session — making them stable for background jobs, scheduled posts, and server-to-server integrations.

## Prerequisites

- Access to [Meta Business Manager](https://business.facebook.com/) with admin rights
- A Facebook App already created (needed for token generation — see [App ID & App Secret guide]({{< surl >}}/insights/odoo-facebook-connect-app-id-and-secret) for how to create one)
- Admin access to the Facebook Page(s) you want to manage

## Step 1 — Create a System User

**1.1** Go to [business.facebook.com](https://business.facebook.com/) and log in.

**1.2** In the sidebar, select your **Business Portfolio** → **Business Assets**.

**1.3** Go to **Settings** → **Users** → **System Users**.

**1.4** Click **Add**.

**1.5** Enter the required information and click **Create system user**.

## Step 2 — Assign Assets to the System User

The system user needs explicit access to the Pages, Ad Accounts, and Apps it will interact with.

**2.1** Go to **Settings** → **Accounts** → **Pages**.

**2.2** Select the Page you want to manage, then click **Assign people**.

**2.3** Select the system user you just created, grant **Full control**, and click **Assign**.

**2.4** Repeat the same process for **Ad Accounts** and **Apps** under **Settings → Accounts**.

## Step 3 — Generate the System User Token

**3.1** Go back to **Settings** → **Users** → **System Users** and select your system user.

**3.2** In the **Assigned assets** section, verify that the Pages, Ad Accounts, and Apps are listed correctly.

**3.3** Click **Generate token**.

**3.4** Select the **App** to generate the token for.

**3.5** Set the **Token expiry** — choose **Never** for a permanent token.

**3.6** Assign the necessary permissions and click **Generate token**.

**3.7** Copy and save the token immediately. **This token is only shown once and cannot be retrieved again.** Store it securely.

## Step 4 — Connect in Odoo

**4.1** In Odoo, go to **Apps** and install:
- `social_media_base`
- `social_media_facebook`

**4.2** Navigate to **Social Media → Dashboard** and click **Add account**.

**4.3** Click **Set System User Token**.

**4.4** Paste the token you generated and click **Associate**.

## What's Next

Once connected, your Facebook Pages appear on the **Social Media Dashboard**. From there you can:

- Publish posts to one or multiple pages simultaneously
- Schedule posts for automatic publishing at a specific date and time
- Attach images or videos to posts
- View and reply to Facebook comments directly from Odoo
- Track post performance metrics (impressions, engagement)

To manage connected accounts later, go to **Social Media → Configuration → Social Accounts** and select the relevant Page.

## Token Security

The system user token grants access to all assets assigned to that system user. Treat it like a password:

- Store it in a secrets manager or Odoo's encrypted configuration, not in plain text
- Revoke and regenerate it immediately if it's exposed
- Limit the token's permissions to only what the integration needs
